AFM - Active Filter Media

Following research into this product we are now offering it as part of our pool and spa plant room consultancy and remedial action service.  The replacement of the normal sand filter media with this glass based filter media has significant benefits not only in filtration but also in anti bacterial action and the health and safety of operatives:

Details of AFM:

1. AFM will remove at least 30% more solids from the water that a high quality silica sand
2. AFM removes much smaller particles than sand through surface adsorption due to the high zeta potential on AFM
3. AFM removes dissolved organics and heavy metals, also by surface adsorption due to the high zeta potential
4. Surface catalytic properties makes AFM self sterilising.
5. AFM does not become blocked by bacterial growth in the filter bed.
6. Surface catalytic reactions cracks organics and decolourises the water.
7. Easy to back-flush, approx. 50% less water is used in comparison to sand
8. Simple backflushing with water recharges the AFM
9. AFM does not get consumed,  it is likely that it will last for the life of the filter.
10. Lower THM production than sand
11. Very high attrition strength, resistant to strong acids and alkalis, does not leach free silica.
12. Sand and zeolites (air born dust) are classified as a grade 2 carcinogens because of the free silica,  zeolites are particularly dangerous. AFM® does not contain any free silica and as such it is much safer to use than sand.

AFM has a fused amorphous and extremely stable structure as exemplified by the very high attrition strength and negligible loss under ignition. Static leaching tests have shown zero (below ppb detection level) leaching of metal ions over extended periods of time. It is believed that AFM will be stable between a pH of 4 and 10 for at least 30 years.

AFM can be complemented by the addition of NoPhos to your pool. NoPhos will almost eliminate phosphate and make the water clearer. Also as phosphate is required as a trace nutrient for algae and bacteria, NoPhos will reduce or prevent bacterial growth.  Combined chlorine and THM levels will also be reduced.  NoPhos is an excellent flocculent, when used before AFM solids down to 1 micron may be filtered from the water.  For more information on NoPhos click here.

NoPhos

NoPhos is prepared from the rare earth element Lanthanum,  the product has three properties with regards to water treatment;

1. Phosphate precipitation
2. Flocculation, NoPhos is an excellent flocculent, when used before AFM solids down to 1 micron may be filtered from the water
3. Bio-Catalyst, when added to activated sludge systems, the NoPhos will create a large stable bacterial floc, which can enhance and stabilise nitrification and BOD reduction

NoPhos in swimming pools:

NoPhos will almost eliminate phosphate and make the water clearer. Also because phosphate is required as a trace nutrient for algae and bacteria, NoPhos will reduce or prevent bacterial growth.  Combined chlorine and THM levels will also be reduced. Add at rate of 2 g of NoPhos per cubic meter of water in the pool per week. Private pools or lightly used pools should use 1 g of NoPhos per cubic meter of water per week. Dissolve NoPhos in 20 litres of water and continuously pump into the water before the sand or AFM filters using a metering pump. NoPhos may be added by hand to the balancing flow tank or pool at the end of the day after the public has left the pool. Can be added in daily or weekly quantities.

Why use AFM as opposed to sand ?

Media bed filtration is a key element in phosphate removal systems. Sand filters act as an excellent support matrix for bacteria, especially bacteria such as Pseudomonas species that produce a extra cellular alginates. The alginates trap solids and promote the growth of more bacteria that eventually cause coagulation of the  filter bed. However during the interim period,  the organics trapped by the alginate are subjected to mineralisation and may release nitrogen and phosphates back into the product water.  AFM does not support bacteria, therefore there will be less organics held within the bed and less to no release of phosphate back into the product water.

AFM and NoPhos combined reactions, re phosphate removal

AFM (Active Filter Media) carries a surface -ve charge, when NoPhosCat   is used in combination with AFM filter media  a high percentage of the catalyst not reacted with the phosphate will combine with the AFM enhancing the surface active properties of AFM.   The NoPhosCat  is then free to react with phosphate to form insoluble phosphate in the filter bed which is then removed on the next back-flush
